In the midst of doing all sorts of hiking in Utah this summer, I had a few minutes to visit the City Library in Salt Lake. I had heard through Andrew what an amazing building it is, but simply couldn't have imagined what I experienced upon walking through the doors. It is five stories, complete with glass walls, glass elevators, comfy seating, plenty of study space, and state-of-the-art circulation desks. After visiting one of the shops on the ground floor (the rent paid by the store owners helps pay for the library) and buying a new journal, I rode the elevator to the rooftop. Plantings are everywhere, making it more beautiful and contributing to a cleaner, cooler environment. A troop of Boy Scouts cares for the beehives pictured above. The building and large number of patrons visiting it are delightful proof that libraries are still relevant and necessary. Seems like an obvious conclusion in this day of massive amounts of information and the need to educate everyone in making sound decisions when sifting through and accessing the floods of data available.
