A Saturday spent celebrating reading
You know it’s a good day when 10 4th and 5th graders get up early on a Saturday to attend an all-day reading event! Readers Rally was March 7th at Berkmar High School, and Stripling’s students did brilliantly. They not only showed a strong grasp of the 15 books they read, they exhibited good sportsmanship and represented Stripling with class. I was very proud of them on Saturday and felt honored to be their coach. However, the most important and exciting part of Readers Rally is what happens from August until March – reading good books, engaging in book discussions, and supporting teammates. My hope for these students is that they always remember that reading is not only the key to academic success, but will also open many doors to them, provide hours of entertainment, and will equip them for almost any social situation. As a fellow GCPS media specialist, Kim Thames, said, “Our students are winners by the fact that they opened these books and read.”
