**** (4 Miss Betty Stars)
My mom, the person primarily responsible for my love of books and libraries, frequently reads children's books for me and writes reviews. Our students love it and are fascinated when I hand them a book and tell them, "Why don't you try this one? I think you would like it and it's recommended by Miss Betty, who is my mom." They look at me in amazement as though they can't believe I have a mom. They probably think I sprang straight out of a shelf in the children's section of the public library, ready to straighten books while still just a wee baby.
Anyway, I think my mom might even love books more than I do. Her love of the finely written word is apparent by the fact that she is seldom seen without a book close by. We also like many of the same authors - give us a book by Maeve Binchy or Rosamunde Pilcher and we are blissfully content.
Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer Holm takes place in 1935 in Key West, Florida. I immediately thought of my mom when I heard about the book, as she is very familiar with the depression era and was born in Florida. The main character, Turtle, has spunk and a sensitive side, two qualities that help her cope when she must leave her mom to live with relatives she's never met. Miss Betty gives this book 4 stars which means that it definitely falls in the must-read category. I suggest you get to know Turtle in the pages of Turtle in Paradise....I almost always take my mom's advice and you might want to as well. How could you not listen to someone who brought her children up with the saying, "Remember: the more you know, the more fun you have!"
