I was able to travel to Birmingham, Alabama to watch my son compete in a duathlon (run-bike-run) this past weekend. The weekend's weather was perfect for being outside all day, and my husband and I loved soaking up the sun and supporting Wilson...the latter amounted to calling, "Go, Wilson!" during our fleeting sitings of him. Our years as cross-country team parents were good training for this event - lots of standing around and waiting involved for spectators.

I was eager to read Secrets at Sea since Richard Peck is usually clever with words, but this book was a bit of a disappointment. Maybe it's just because I've read a few too many books with mice as the main characters, but this novel was a little short on inspiration. However, if you like fantasy with a few historical facts about England's royalty thrown in, this is a quick and light read. Also, my response to Peck's book might have been colored by my head-over-heels in-love reaction to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. It is easily one of the most visually beautiful books I've ever read and Lin's adept handling of an intricate story line makes each chapter a joy to read. Whoever chose this Newbery Honor book for the Readers Rally list for 2012.13 did a great service to us all. It is definitely a book that lends itself to re-reading, intense discussion, and research about
